Since establishment in 2001 Get Behind The Badge has provided emotional and financial assistance to the families of first responders, both law enforcement and fire, killed in the line of duty. Our Charter also allowed us to provide financial assistance for those first responder families who have suffered financial hardship due to death, injury or illness.

💙 25 years ago today, Whitehall Police Officer Terry McDowell was shot and killed in the line of duty.On August 24, 2001, the 35-year-old U.S. Army and 12-year department veteran went with his partner, Officer Eric Brill, to a home on Beechbank Road to serve a traffic citation. As they knocked, the homeowner opened fire through the door without warning.Officer McDowell was fatally struck in the chest. Officer Brill survived shots to the face and eye but was forced to retire early due to his injuries.Following this tragedy, Get Behind the Badge was founded to provide critical financial assistance to the families of killed or injured first responders.Get Behind the Badge is deeply thinking about the McDowell and Brill families today. 🙏
